Charles John was articled in Bath where he began to practise in 1858. He reconstructed Bath Theatre in 1862-3 and then removed to London and became a recognised authority on Theatre construction and was engaged on construction or alteration of some 20 theatres in London as well as others in provincial towns. His principal work was Her Majesty's Theatre, Haymarket completed in 1897.
